Hi Doc Filmmaker!
We're Chris G. Parkhurst and Stephanie Vincenti (partners in life & in business).
We have collectively been working in the television, commercial, narrative and documentary feature film worlds for the past 30 years.
We are now exclusively documentary filmmakers, as well as producers of the highly popular documentary filmmaking podcast - The Documentary Life.
We built this course for three reasons:
Reason #1. We have spent many years conducting & filming over 100+ interviews and wanted to share some of the most critical tips & recommendations on how to conduct that most critical element of the doc film: the documentary interview!
Reason #2. Over the past 30+ combined years of our filmmaking experience we have worked and lived for long periods overseas - in North & South America, Europe, Asia and Australia - and this has allowed us to develop substantial skills, tips and techniques to ensure we make the most out of trips, safely, securely, creatively, all along while having unforgettable experiences throughout the world. We want the same for you and will guide you to help make that happen.
Reason #3. We recognize the (often overlooked!) importance of visually telling the story of your documentary with the carefully constructed use of effective & compelling b-roll. And we also realize the importance of shooting and employing BTS footage for your social media campaigns, film extras, crowdfunding & marketing campaigns.
We truly built this course for you!
We built this course in order to help you produce some of the most essential (but often overlooked) aspects of your film - the all-important documentary interview, powerful b-roll, the critical elements of your promotional materials (including behind-the-scenes footage) - and support you in wherever you might find yourself filming in the world.
We are going to help you make your best documentary film - whatever it's about, whatever resources you have and wherever it's being shot.
You will have a stronger understanding of the role of your interviewee, what to consider when interviewing them and a more conscious and consistent visual style for your interviews
You will have a much clearer idea of why you should shoot behind-the-scenes footage and stills, where you will use this much needed content and how you will achieve it - even if you are a one-man band!
You will have a comprehensive list of the b-roll shots you wish to achieve - whether representative or counterpoint to your audio - which will make your documentary film a much more cinematic experience
You will have completed an essential list of tasks when filming your documentary film abroad which include the necessary preparation before your trip and what to plan for whilst you are there. You'll also have a greater understanding of how to ease back into 'normal' life upon your return home
